Wedding Photojournalism

In your search for a wedding photographer, you will of course come across terms such as reportage, journalistic, documentary or natural wedding photography, which of course basically all refer to the same style of photography – wedding photojournalism. These days it’s more of a buzz word, with loads of wedding photographers marketing themselves as wedding photojournalists. But just so you know exactly what you need for your wedding, I’ll let break it all down for you ...

What is wedding photojournalism?

It’s the type of photography normally ascribed journalists, as they observe and document live news events as they unfold. Wikipedia describes photojournalism as:

“… a particular form of journalism (the collecting, editing, and presenting of news material for publication or broadcast) that employs images in order to tell a news story. Photojournalism is distinguished from other close branches of photography by complying with a rigid ethical framework which demands that the work be both honest and impartial whilst telling the story in strictly journalistic terms. Photojournalists create pictures that contribute to the news media, and help communities connect with one other. They deliver news in a creative format that is not only informative, but also entertaining.”

Wedding photojournalism was born about the early 1990’s when photojournalists started photographing weddings, and infused it with their unique style of photography. It’s largely said this was popularised by Dennis Reggie, who is currently one of the top wedding photojournalists in the United States. According to him:

“We quietly capture authentic wedding moments knowing that people look best when unaware of the camera and are just being themselves.”

.. and this is the essence of wedding photojournalism. To capture the day as it unfolds without interference, capturing it with authenticity and honesty. True wedding photojournalists will no stage anything at all on the day. They won’t touch the wedding dress or accessories. Everything will be captured just as the photographer sees them, and this is the authenticity in it all.

Our Wedding Photography Style

While we are pretty good photojournalists, we understand that not everyone will appreciate strict photojournalism on their special day, and many will love great portraits on the day. So, we’ve evolved a bit and shoot what I like to call artistic wedding photojournalism with a slight fashion tilt.

When we work with you as photojournalists, we try to understand yourselves and the family dynamics, so that we can quietly capture those little moments, smiles, hugs and emotions that make you and yours who you all are. While this is happening, we are also always focused and looking out for the best light, best backgrounds, and best angles to capture those family stories in the very best way possible.

When it’s time for the partying, we dive deep into the mix, creating images that’ll make anyone feel they were right there on the dance floor.

Finally, of course we also make out time to create amazing fine art portraits, as well as fashion-style poses for the portrait sessions. For these, we are pretty great at posing and giving directions where needed.

This way you get a bit of traditional wedding images, crazy party images, and great photojournalistic images, all combined to tell an amazing story of your special day.

Nigerian Wedding Photographer

I sometimes brand myself as a Nigerian wedding photographer just because I'm of Nigerian ethnicity. This does not mean I photograph only Nigerian weddings. I have experience from photographing over 500 weddings including Nigerian weddings, Ghana weddings, multicultural weddings, Afro Caribbean weddings, Ugandan Weddings, Brazilian weddings, Zimbabwean weddings, Asian weddings, Muslim weddings, etc, and I have perfected our style to suit everyone regardless of the type of wedding you’re celebrating.
